Mackintosh was the former lieutenant-governor of the Northwest Territories (1893-1898) who was part of a consortium led by Dr. Robert Brett and David MacPherson that purchased the resort from Captain Robert Sanderson in 1898 and ran it until 1924, when the resort was transferred to General Fred Burnham.
